Hi,

I testing Bacula 1.36.0 at the moment. Everthing work fine, except the restore makes waves. If I restore tape stored files I sometime get an error like this

--------------
DNS-and-FTP-Server: -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 4761012 2005-05-23 08:23:33 /home/bacula-restores/opt/blackdown-jdk-1.4.

-------------

I use a HP StorageWorks Ultrium 460 Tape Drive (LTO-2). I've read that this error is maybe caused by an damage tape drive or tape. Is that true? I have tested different tapes and the error somtimes still appears deping on amount of data or whatever.
If I run the SD with the -p option the restore works and the relevant files seem to be ok.

Is this really a tape drive problem or maybe a controller error or .... ? How can I be sure that all my files are restored right at any time when using the -p option? I have to backup 8 Servers and an amout of data of 200 GB.

Best regards

Matty

I have had this problem before and i too thought at first it was dodgy
media/drive/scsi card, however, the problem "went away" when I upgraded
to the latest version of bacula (currently 1.36.3). I also use and
LTO-2 tape libraray (Overland Powerloader) but im not sure that this has
anything to do with the issue :)

The most likely source of this kind of error is a bad tape or possibly bad
RAM. It would be *really* hard for Bacula to create a block checksum error
because of a bug. I can believe that the problem went away when you
upgraded, but it was most likely because you changed tapes.

All I would say is that (in my experience) the newer version seems to
deal with the error of having file size mismatches better (i.e. before
it stopped the whole restore process, whereas now it complains but
carries on)

Hello,
Hi,
i have tried version 1.36.3 but the error still appeared. BUT I solved the
problem finally :-) I update the HP StorageWorks Ultrium 460 Tape Drive
with latest firmware update. Now it works fine without errors. Quite
interessting!!!
Yes, that is very interesting. I have never heard anything like that before.
Does HP provide any explanation on the problem and why the firmware upgrade
fixed it ?

Hello,

I didn't find any explanations or similar error descriptions on the HP Support Site. Just updating the firmware was my last idea what I could do.

See firmware changes on this drive:
http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareDescription.jsp?locale=en_US&lang=English+%28US%29&pnameOID=238673&prodSeriesId=238671&prodTypeId=12169&basePartNum=COL1925&locBasepartNum=co-24250-1&os=Red+Hat+Linux+7.2&tech=Firmware

May updating the firmware could resolve same or similar problems with other tape drives.

Best regards

Matty

It is probably the "Improvements to SCSI compatibility/connectivity" that made
the difference. I read this as "we corrected a bug"
