Hi,

As I am new user for Bacula, I am not much aware about it. I am trying
to setup bacula on windows platform (win 32) but I don't know how to
setup bacula configuration files. Basically, I have got 1 server (window
2003) and 10 pc and all PCs are in network and now I want to backup all
the PC on particular time or day. To store the data I have got LTO 4
with Cartridges and I have setup it and its working fine. Now I want to
setup bacula on server so I can do backup. I have tried to install it
from Bacula website but its showing bacula client files only. I
installed it but it did not work and continuously it was showing
connecting to director but where is director? so I think I need bacula
server package as well !! I would be thankful to you if you can give me
the answers of following questions and help me to setup bacula.

1. Do I need two separate package(Source file) to setup bacula on
windows
2. Could you please tell me where can I download source file for
it. (there is just bacula client source from bacula website)
3. Could you please tell me how to setup bacula?

Any help would be appreciated. Looking forward to positive response from
your side as soon as possible.

Bacula consists of 3 different parts. A client (for the servers/pc's you
want to backup), a storage daemon (to control the storage device) and a
director (the controlling daemon).

Only the client is officially supported and released for windows. The
director and storage daemon are not, so it'll be difficult to get those
to run without a linux/solaris/... server. (as shown here
<http://www.bacula.org/en/dev-manual/main/main/Supported_Operating_Systems.html>)
It has been done by some people, but it's not an easy and usually buggy
thing to do.

Kind regards,
Jeremy

I agree. Its much better / easier to run the director, database and
storage on a linux, bsd or Solaris machine. And this is the only
supported configuration.

One exception to that: the database server could run on anything. It's
a client-server relationship. I see no technical issue with running the
database (i.e. Catalog) on a remote system, which could be anything....

For 6+ years with bacula at work we run database, director and main
storage 3 different machines so I know the database does work fine
remotely.

Hello,

You should definitely start by reading the manual.
http://www.bacula.org/5.0.x-manuals/en/main/main/index.html

It will explain the basic concepts, agents (Directory, Storage Daemon,
File Daemon) and also gives details on the Windows version of Bacula:

- -
http://www.bacula.org/5.0.x-manuals/en/main/main/What_is_Bacula.html#SECTION00220000000000000000
- -
http://www.bacula.org/5.0.x-manuals/en/main/main/Windows_Version_Bacula.html

Without this basic knowledge, you will unfortunately have a hard time
installing, configuring and operating Bacula.

You will want that tape drive on the same system as your bacula-sd,
which in your case is Ubuntu. Start with bacula-dir, bacula-sd, and the
database all on one server. You will also want bacula-fd on that server
so you can backup that server.

Also for ubuntu make sure that none of the ip addresses in the
configuration files are 127.0.0.1 or localhost. Instead use the
external ip address. Debian derivatives tend to set bacula up this way
by default but that prevents bacula from being used as a network
backup since the only machine that can connect is the server itself..

Hi,

I have installed bacula director on ubuntu by simply following this command sudo apt-get install bacula and it installed on my ubuntu server and then I installed bacula-client on window machine and when it asked me about director information I just filled out ubuntu info.

(
Dir name : ubuntu-dir
Dir address : IP address of ubuntu machine
Dir Password: ????? what am I supposed to enter here? Because by default it's encrypted password on my ubuntu machine bacula-dir.conf (bacula-director) file.
)

Then I tried to start bacula concole from window machine but I could not see director and it was not showing any error as well so I just went to event viewer and came to know about following error

Bacula ERROR: , /home/kern/bacula/k/bacula/src/lib/bsock.c:135 Unable to connect to Director daemon on 192.168.10.68:9101. ERR=The operation completed successfully.

If anything I did wrong then please let me know the exact procedures

I am trying to follow these procedures http://www.devtoolshed.com/content/how-back-windows-bacula but before that I need to sort out bacula-dir problem..

No there is not a default.

You need to make the passwords match from the server to client by
specifying the director password in the client's configuration file
(bacula-fd.conf) in the Director resource. This must match what the
Director has as a password in the Client Resource of the
bacula-dir.conf file on the server.

I don't think that the director password in bacula-dir.conf is encrypted.
You can probably copy and paste it into the bacula-fd.conf on the client
(at least, this is what I have always been able to do on my setup).

At a guess, whether there is a default for the password probably depends upon
your distribution. But since you know where it is now, you might as well
change it if you don't like it.

Also, remember to restart your daemons when you make configuration changes.
If you are using a Windows client, you need to find the Services screen.

As Graham says, the password isn't encrypted. It is randomly generated
when you install, so it might look like your typical hashed/encrypted
password. This password is what is used to authenticate communication
between the console and the director. There are other passwords like it
for communication between DIR-FD or DIR-SD.

You can change the passwords to whatever you like, as long as you change
them in both the director configuration and the relevant console, file
daemon or storage daemon configuration.

So for your windows console to be able to connect you'll have to make
sure that the password setting in bconsole.conf on the windows machine
is the same as the director password in bacula-dir.conf on your ubuntu
machine.

error
Bat:ABORTIMG due to ERROR in console/console.cpp:155

Just a thought, the name of director on the client needs to be right.
And the name of the client on the server needs to be right. Just check it.

Hi,

First I checked the status of bacula-dir by entering sudo
/etc/init.d/bacula-director status.

It's showing

Bacula-dir is running...

Now I tried to connect dir from window client so after some time
bacula-director dies.. and status showing bacula-dir is not running. Why
did status changed automatically? Is bacula-client is crashing
bacula-director?
Due to this error I am getting following error.

Bat:ABORTIMG due to ERROR in console/console.cpp:155
Failed to connect to ubuntu-dr for populateLists

change it if you don't like it.
Also, remember to restart your daemons when you make configuration

Post by Graham Keeling
If you are using a Windows client, you need to find the Services
screen.

So for your windows console to be able to connect you'll have to make
sure that the password setting in bconsole.conf on the windows machine
is the same as the director password in bacula-dir.conf on your ubuntu
machine.

Hi,

I think you are right John, when I checked my log file it is showing

Error termination:
Please correct configuration file: /etc/bacula/bacula-dir.conf
Fatar error: could not open catalog "MyCatalog"
Fatar error: mysql.c : unable to connect to database=bacula user=bacula
MySQL connect failed either server not running or your authorization is
incorrect

SO I think I need to configure mysql as well with bacula-dir as you
said.
Correct? And where are the steps to configure it ?

You should not be having these many problems. Did you configure mysql
during bacula compile? Or if you did it via apt-get, did you specify
mysql? These is extensive documentation on configuring the database?

You need to create the database "bacula" and user "bacula" in the MySQL
console.

mysql -u root

SQL> create database bacula ;
SQL> grant all on bacula.* to ***@localhost identified by 'password';

Then you need to create the database content for bacula. You need the
make_bacula_tables.sql script for that. It is shipped with Bacula source
distribution and is in the /etc/bacula/scripts folder if I'm not mistaken.

SQL> use bacula;

I'll refer you to the manual part about installing and configuring mysql
for bacula:
http://www.bacula.org/manuals/en/catalog/catalog/Installing_Configurin_MySQL.html

You will probably need the information in the Phase II part of the info
there. You will need to run 3 scripts that will create the bacula
database, grant the bacula user the correct permissions and then create
the necessary tables in that database for bacula to run.

Kind regards,
Jeremy

Hi,

I created database as you said but I could not find
make_bacula_tables.sql into particular folder. There was scripts folder
but not this file. So Do I need to create separately? If yes, what am I
suppose to write? Now I am sure it's database problem. Because still
bacula-director goes offline Continuously.

Regards,

Laxansh

Hi,
I have checked it. Both are same but now it seems like database issue
as
Post by Laxansh K. Adesara
in the log file its showing database error. But I have already
installed

mysql database and in the bacula-dir configuration file by default it
was showing my database details e.g. database name, username n
password.

But still error is saying configure your database. So what do I need
to

do to configure mysql database with bacula-director?
Regards,
Laxansh
You need to create the database "bacula" and user "bacula" in the MySQL
console.

mysql -u root

SQL> create database bacula ;
SQL> grant all on bacula.* to ***@localhost identified by 'password';

Then you need to create the database content for bacula. You need the
make_bacula_tables.sql script for that. It is shipped with Bacula source
distribution and is in the /etc/bacula/scripts folder if I'm not
mistaken.

SQL> use bacula;
SQL> source /etc/bacula/scripts/make_bacula_tables.sql;

Hi,
I am Using same password in Ubuntu and window but now whenever I try
to

connect bacula director from windows(bat file) it's showing following
error
Bat:ABORTIMG due to ERROR in console/console.cpp:155
Failed to connect to ubuntu-dr for populateLists.
I don't know where I am making mistakes. I Have also opened the port
9101 n 9102 still director is not connecting with window client. Any
help????
Regards,
Laxansh
Just a thought, the name of director on the client needs to be right.
And the name of the client on the server needs to be right. Just check
it.
