Hi all

I temporarily swithed from Solairs to Linux to use Bacula which works
fine. I have completed backing up
Windows, MAC os X and Unix. Now time for tesing recovery from disaster.
I wonder how to do bare metal recovery for MAC os X.
There are Windows, Linux and Unix in the manudal but not Mac os X. is
it possible to do it?
or I just install MAC os X first and recover user data.

thank you

You have a few options:
- Install a bare OSX system and restore from tape to that. Sadly, I bet
OS files from the install that you deleted won't be deleted by the
restore. If you're using radmind for machine managment and bacula for
data, just install/clone you base image to the blank drive, radmind it
and then bacula restore.

- Make a backup CD using BootCD with bacula on it and then restore to a
blank drive: http://www.charlessoft.com/

- Use a tool like Carbon Copy Cloner to make a ASR image you can boot
from and restore with either bacula or the CCC image for Apps.
http://www.bombich.com/software/ccc.html

- You could probably make a nice NetBoot image and boot OSX with bacula
across the network. Sadly, IIRC, NetBoot uses the disk for swap and the
shadow image so restoring might be an issue.

- Use OSX's installer to remake the filesystems, boot a PPC Linux CD (YDL,
Debian, Fedora, SuSe) with bacula and restore from that. Just make sure
whatever distro you're using has HFS+ support. YDL4 should.

- If you have recent Drive10 CD it should boot the mac and give you a
terminal with networking, but depending on these boot discs is always
dicey, they age quickly.
